Ding Repair Basics
When your board gets dinged, repair it immediately. If a ding happens while surfing, get out of the water to minimize water saturation in the damaged area. The following brief “self help” instructions are intended to assist in getting you and board back in the water sooner.

How To Fix A Ding Yourself

1. Never use duct tape as a ding repair. Duct tape doesn’t keep water out. In fact, it will do worse by allowing water in and holds it in the dinged area. A decal is a better option if you are trying to make it water tight.

2. Never use wax to plug up a ding. This too, still allows water entry. Worst of all, it will keep resin from adhering to the ding when you finally try to repair it properly.

3. Buy a ding repair kit. There are several products that work quite well. The easiest and most convenient is “Suncure” (available in most shops). This product is a UV curing resin (no mixing involved) thats has fiber integrated within the resin. There is a version for polyester boards and one for epoxy boards. Using “Suncure” can literally get you back out in the surf in as little as 15 minutes. Traditional catalyst cure resin kits are available in the shop but must be explained in more detail than space allows. These products come with instructions. If you can read, you can repair a surfboard.

4. Prep the board. Allow a wet ding to “air” dry. You can also “sponge” up much of the moisture with paper towels. Once the ding is fairly “dry”, sand around the ding.

5. Apply “Suncure” on the ding. Ensure you’re in a shaded area. Spread the suncure accordingly. Expose the repair to sunlight and the resin will cure within 5 minutes (longer if it’s cloudy).

6. Sand down excess cured resin to match contour of the board.

7. Back out in the surf!
